Your books are sealed on YOUR device before they go anywhere.
I can never read them, not even on my own servers. In a minute you'll set up your account (just your email, no password), and it gives you the ability to sync: add any other device whenever you like, and your books follow, still sealed the whole way.

Two rules that will save your life:

1. Keep a backup anyway. Settings → Back Up Now saves a file you keep. Sync is your convenience; the backup file is your parachute. Belt and suspenders, always.

2. Guard your keys. They're what keep your books safe and truly private: your PIN locks this device, and your account's recovery key is the only thing that can open your synced books. Nobody can reset them for you, not even me, and that's exactly why nobody else can read your books. Lost keys = restore from your backup file.
